My Arthur family goes back to William (Arters) Arthur born abt. 1770 in Mifflon, PA who married Mary "Polly" Davidson Friend. Mary was born in 1787 in Harrison County, VA.

They had several children but my direct ancestor is Friend Davidson Arthur, born in 1805 in Randolph Co. W. Va. and died after 1880 in Mason County, W. Va. He married Jane Taylor born Jan. 14, 1837 in Nicholas County, VA.

Their son Christopher Columbus Arthur, born December 19, 1837 in Greenbriar County, W. Va. (other listings state Summersville, W. Va.) and died Feb. 26, 1911. He married Mary Ann Clark on June 1, 1860 in Gallia County. Mary was the daughter of Isaac Clark and Anna Lee. She was born, September 10, 1842, in Gallia County, Ohio and died February 17, 1910.

Chris & Mary's son William "Sherman" Arthur was born October 10, 1867 in Gallipolis, Gallia Co. OH. He married Ella R. Cooper December 30, 1893 in Gallia Co. Ella was the daughter of John Cooper and Jane Bane. Ella was born March 1, 1874 and died September 26, 1945 in Gallipolis.

Sherman & Ella's son Paul Sherman Arthur was born March 18, 1898 in Gallipolis, Gallia Co. OH.  and died October 24, 1962 in London Bridge, VA. He first married Virginia Salmon May 31, 1923 in Cabell Co. W. Va. They later divorced. He married Lucille Marie Pence May 5, 1933 in Spencer, W. Va. Lucille was born October 16, 1911 in Gandeeville, Roane Co. W. Va., she died August 23, 2003 iln St. Cloud, FL.

Paul had two daughters, one from each wife: Martha Virginia Campbell was born to him and Virginia Salmon. She died in 1982.

Second daughter, my mother, Mary Jane Arthur, who married Joe E. Abbott.
