FamilySearch Head to Deliver Keynote Address at OGS 2011 Conference
Ohio genealogists should be looking forward to the kick-off presentation
at the Ohio Genealogical Society's 2011 Conference. "We welcome David E.
Rencher from FamilySearch as our keynote speaker on Friday morning,"
explains OGS President Sunda Anderson Peters.
The 2011 Annual Conference will be held March 31 to April 2, 2011
(Thursday through Saturday), at The Hyatt on Capitol Square, in Columbus
under the theme "Genealogy through the Centuries."
David E. Rencher, AG, CG, FIGRS, FUGA, is the Chief Genealogical Officer for
FamilySearch. The title of his presentation is "Digital Projects and
Programs of FamilySearch." He will address the opening session on Friday,
April 1, from 8 to 9:30 am.
This session will update the genealogist with what's new and upcoming on
FamilySearch.org. This will include the digital projects and programs that
have been launched on FamilySearch.org or the projects that are nearing
completion. A discussion of what's in the research and development stage at
FamilySearch Labs will also be addressed.
The conference begins on Thursday, March 31, with eight intensive learning
opportunities in the form of workshops for beginning and advanced
genealogists. "We think we have assembled a great lineup of workshops for
attendees at the upcoming annual conference," states Diane Gagel, program
chairperson, pointing out that subject experts have been selected to lead
each of the workshops.
During Friday and Saturday, the program offers 58 presentations on a
variety of subjects, including technology, DNA, methodology, record types,
and regional research. In addition, several presentations will focus on
ethnic genealogical research, and six presentations will appeal to
genealogists interested in African-American research.
The complete conference program and registration form is downloadable from
the OGS website at www.ogs.org. For questions about the program, contact
Conference Chairperson Diane Gagel by telephone at (419) 878-0697 or by
email at <conference2011@ogs.org>. |
Conference Hotel Update
Our contracted discounted room block at the Hyatt on Capitol Square has
sold out, but some additional rooms have been added at a rate of $124 per
night, which is still lower than the hotel's normal rate. The hotel's
booking web site will reflect this as well beginning Tuesday, but the link
to the Conference hotel will not change for guests. One block from the
Conference Hotel is a Holiday Inn. OGS does not have an arrangement with
them, so guests will receive their normal rates. The number of the Holiday
Inn is 614-221-3281. Contact your travel agent or favorite online site for
other hotels in the Columbus area.
We have had questions about WIFI at the Conference hotel. WIFI is
available in the rooms for an extra charge. It is not included in the room
rate. However, OGS has contracted for free WIFI in the Conference Center on
Friday and Saturday.
|
Conference Parking
OGS has arranged with the Hyatt for one complimentary valet parked car per
room. Additional valet parked cars are charged at the discounted rate of $10
per car, per night. The complimentary valet parking may not be transferred
to a different room. For those guests not staying overnight, the discounted
day rate valet parking is $7 per car. Guests must tell the parking
attendants they are with the OGS Conference to get the reduced rates.

OGS Cemetery Information
The Ohio Genealogical Society has had an interest in Ohio's cemeteries
from the time of its founding in 1959. The Society's first publication, in
1960, was entitled Marlow-Patterson Cemetery, Richland County, Ohio. Many
other works followed in this line.
The Society encourages its Chapters to publish transcriptions, and offers
advice on cemetery law and preservation methods.
In addition, the Society has attempted to identify all Ohio cemeteries. A
milestone in that effort was the publication in 2003 of Ohio Cemeteries
1803-2003, Roger Troutman, editor. This 910-page, hardcover volume
describes and gives the location of over 14,000 cemeteries in Ohio. It also
provides a complete bibliography of cemetery transcriptions contained in the
Ohio Genealogical Society library, as well as county maps and indexes by
multiple cemetery names.
In addition, the OGS Cemetery Committee has put together a variety of
resources for those interested in reading, researching, or preserving
cemeteries.
To read more about OGS and Ohio cemeteries, go to www.ogs.org, click on
About OGS, then click on Ohio Cemeteries under the heading OGS Projects. Or
choose from the links to explore some of the cemetery information offered,
including Cemetery Preservation, Cemetery Restoration, Reading Gravestones,
and Finding Cemeteries/ Owners/Operators

Important News About 2010 Federal Income Tax Deductions
OGS would like to share timely and important information about changes in
the tax code, approved by Congress in the lame duck session during the week
prior to Christmas. This could have an impact upon you and the Ohio
Genealogical Society. One change could specifically affect you as you
prepare your 2010 tax filing.
If you are 70 ½ years of age or older and have an Individual Retirement
Account (IRA), you probably already know that you are required to take a
minimum annual distribution, or face a penalty. The extension passed by
Congress includes a provision to allow you to “roll over” your required
minimum distribution to a qualified charity instead of that amount coming to
you and thus, changing your tax status.
This is especially helpful to those who would rather see their distribution
used to further the programs and goals of the Ohio Genealogical Society.
IT IS IMPORTANT TO KNOW THAT CONGRESS HAS MADE PROVISIONS FOR YOU TO TAKE
ADVANTAGE OF THIS OPTION FOR THE 2010 TAX YEAR, IF THE ROLLOWVER IS
COMPLETED BY JANUARY 31, 2011. If you wish to take advantage of this
rollover, please consult your tax advisor or IRA custodian, and then, we
will be happy to work with you to appropriately handle all of the details.
If you would like to discuss this or other issues related to planned gifts
or ways to include OGS in your estate plans, please contact Library Director
Tom Neel at 419-886-1903 or by email.
The officers and staff of the Ohio Genealogical Society wish you blessings
in the New Year. |

Showcase your genealogical writing talent in one of the Ohio Genealogical
Society’s outstanding journals. OGS is sponsoring its fourth annual
genealogical writing contest, which is open to authors of genealogical and
historical material. In doing so, OGS will reward genealogical authorship
and will feature the winners in its journals.
Authors may submit up to eight entries with a maximum of two entries in each
of the following OGS journal categories:
• Ohio Genealogy News (OGN - quarterly newsletter, included in OGS
membership) concentrates on genealogical record groups, collections,
research techniques, databases and websites related to Ohio genealogy and
history, as well as articles about OGS, its chapters and other genealogical
news.
• Ohio Genealogical Society Quarterly (OGSQ - quarterly journal, included in
OGS membership) publishes articles relating to the full spectrum of Ohio
history and genealogy. Types of articles include case studies, abstracts and
transcriptions of Ohio related materials, and Bible records.
• Ohio Records & Pioneer Families (ORPF - quarterly, by subscription)
focuses on Ohio from pre-colonial times to the Civil War historically and
accepts articles on Ohio records groups including abstracts and
transcriptions of such records.
• Ohio Civil War Genealogy Journal (OCWGJ - quarterly, by subscription)
features anything relating to Ohioans who served the Civil War including
post-war related activities such as reconstruction and the GAR. |
Three winning articles will be selected in each category. Prizes and
competition details are available through the OGS website at http://www.ogs.org. The contest is open to all OGS members as well as
non-members. Both amateur and professional writers may submit articles.

Start Now on Your 2011 Application for Membership in OGS Lineage Societies
The deadline for 2010 OGS Lineage Society applications has passed, and
reviewers for the four OGS Lineage Societies are in the process of approving
applications that were postmarked before the 31 Dec 2010 deadline.
Many applicants who sent in their applications earlier have already have
heard back from the reviewers about their status. Successful applicants will
be honored at the 2011 OGS Conference.
If you have been thinking about filling out an application for one of the
lineage societies (First Families of Ohio, Society of Civil War Families of
Ohio, Settlers and Builders of Ohio, and Century Families of Ohio), now is
the time to start collecting the necessary genealogical information. Go to
the OGS website and click on the application links to download the
instructions and an application.
The application can be filled in with your computer and printed out. A good
working procedure is to download an application form to your computer, fill
it out with all the information that you know, and then print it out. Add
additional information to this draft copy by pen or pencil as you collect
it. After you have fine-tuned the information on the draft of your
application, you can retype it neatly into another form and print it out for
mailing to OGS before 31 Dec 2011.
